Horsemanship Test

The GSDHJA Horsemanship Challenge

The GSDHJA Horsemanship Challenge is a great way to test your current knowledge about horses and their care, as well as equipment and showing related questions. GSDHJA will offer a written test during the Del Mar Horsepark Show Friday and Saturday November 6,7  with a practical test being given to the top scores in different age groups. Prizes and scholarship money are awarded to the top finishers!

The test is open to all GSDHJA members who compete as juniors or amateurs.

There will be 3 age groups:

        12 and under, 13-17, 18 and over

Winners of each age group will receive a GSDHJA embroidered boot bag and $250!

The test is free.  All you do is show up to the VIP tent next to the horse show office anytime between 10:00-4:00 on Friday or Saturday to receive your test.  Tests will be taken in the Grand Prix field seats to allow for lots of social distancing!

Example subject areas include:  parts of the horse, tack questions, show rules, lameness and illnesses, striding questions, feed questions, and horse care questions.

Can you name two types of hay? Or three parts on a bridle? Can striped rails be used in hunter classes?

The United States Pony Club has wonderful study guides available online, and it is easy to study a picture of parts of the horse. Then ask your trainer or barn mates to quiz you after a lesson! Learning these extra things can be fun!

USHJA now offers a Challenge online, with rewards and opportunities, and our Challenge is a perfect way to begin learning more about horses and the sport!

Challenge yourself, challenge your barn mates, help each other learn, and maybe win some cool prizes along the way!

The qualification to show in any of the GSDHJA Medal Finals held on Sunday November 8 are that the rider must have competed and been judged at least one time in that specific Medal during the 2020 season. ALL GSDHJA Medals will be offered at the Del Mar Horsepark Show the week of Finals prior to Sunday and will count toward Medal Finals qualifications.

The GSDHJA 2020 Season concludes on November 8, 2020. This will be the last day to earn points towards year end standings for 2020. All submissions of corrections/inquiries regarding points from the Medal Finals and November show will be due within 10 days upon posting of the Medal Finals show points. All points corrections/inquiries from the October horse shows are due by November 1, 2020.
